Collaboration

Bringing the fastest internet ever to every part of Flanders

Investing in future‑ready infrastructure is essential for a stronger economy and faster innovation. That’s why Wyre, Telenet, Fiberklaar and Proximus are joining forces. With the approval from the Belgian Competition Authority, the four companies have signed a collaboration agreement to accelerate the rollout of fiber optic internet. Their shared ambition is bold: to bring internet speeds of up to 10 Gbps to every corner of Flanders at record pace, delivering speeds up to ten times faster than today’s connections.

Existing network upgrade

The current Hybrid Fiber Coax network is being upgraded to support speeds of up to 10 Gbps – up to ten times faster than today’s connections.

One goal, three smart approaches

The strength of this partnership is its efficiency. Instead of simply working side by side, we combine our expertise to choose the best solution for each location. In some neighborhoods, two fiber optic networks will be deployed. In others, we’ll build and share one open‑access network. And at the same time, the existing Hybrid Fiber Coax network will be upgraded to deliver faster speeds than ever. Three approaches, one shared goal: bringing ultra‑fast internet to every corner of Flanders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this mean for you?

Have questions about the joint fiber rollout and what it means for you? Below you’ll find answers tailored to all groups involved.

By working together, we avoid duplication of work and can roll out fiber across much of Flanders faster and more efficiently. In practice, this means fewer excavation works and a smarter use of investments. Thanks to this partnership, around 500,000 additional households will gain access to fiber compared with a scenario where Wyre and Fiberklaar each built their own network independently.

As a resident, you’ll benefit from ultra‑fast, reliable internet, a future‑ready network and more choice between service providers. In most areas, the partnership also means less disruption, because only one party will build the network. Only in cities and densely populated areas do Wyre and Proximus each roll out their own fiber network, and there we coordinate the works with each other through the synergy arrangement.

No, you can still choose your own operator. Where a shared network is rolled out, both Wyre and Fiberklaar guarantee open access to the network. This means that Proximus, Orange and Telenet will all be available everywhere. The choice of operator is therefore completely independent of the party installing the fiber network.

Yes. In areas with a shared network, Wyre and Fiberklaar coordinate their work to avoid duplicate construction sites and overlapping excavation works. The result: less disruption, shorter construction timelines, and more efficient use of public space.

You’ll also notice the difference in the long term. In these areas, one operator will manage the entire network. Today, it’s still common to see Fiberklaar carrying out interventions one week and Wyre the next. That will no longer be the case where the shared network is deployed. In dual‑network areas, we will of course do everything possible to minimize disruption.

You can find the latest overview of the fiber deployment across Flanders on the fiber map provided by the BIPT (Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications).

By working together, we’re giving everyone faster access to the fastest internet ever and building a future‑ready network across Flanders. The partnership also means less disruption, as in most cases only one party will build the network. Only in cities and densely populated areas will Wyre and Proximus each deploy their own fiber network, and in those areas both parties coordinate their works closely to keep disruption to a minimum.

Absolutely. In areas where a shared network is being built, only one party will need to apply for permits. This significantly reduces administrative work. However, some temporary additional administration may be needed to align existing works and permits with the partnership.

This means that Wyre will be responsible for all construction works. If permits need to be modified or new permits requested as a result, we will contact you directly.

That's certainly possible. In cities and densely populated areas, Wyre and Proximus/Fiberklaar each roll out their own fiber network. The works are coordinated with each other as much as possible through the synergy arrangement to limit disruption. In locations where we roll out a shared fiber network together, the deployment areas don't always follow municipal boundaries. So it's possible that even if your municipality falls within the collaboration area, both Wyre and Proximus/Fiberklaar will roll out their network there. In that case, we will always provide a personal point of contact for each network operator and each location.

Yes. Where a shared network is being rolled out, the works will be carried out by Wyre or Fiberklaar. To minimize disruption in these areas, we coordinate the construction works as closely as possible. In locations where we jointly roll out a shared fiber network, the rollout areas do not always follow municipal boundaries.

If your city or municipality falls within such an area, both Wyre and Fiberklaar may deploy fiber there without overlapping construction works. Where a shared network is being built, one designated operator will act as your point of contact for each rollout area.

Where a shared network is being built, only one party will carry out the works. We ensure that all stakeholders are informed clearly and on time, work closely with municipal services, continuously monitor progress, and restore public areas to a high-quality, sustainable standard after completion. Our goal is to minimize the impact on public spaces and residents as much as possible.

In these areas, little will change: both parties will continue to maintain their own networks and organize this as efficiently as possible.

Yes, that is possible. In certain areas, Fiberklaar will take full responsibility for the fiber rollout. This network will remain open and shared, meaning that all telecom providers will have access to it. Residents will therefore continue to have access to all telecom providers through this network.

The existing network (HFC – Hybrid Fiber Coax) will remain operational. However, it will not be upgraded in areas where a shared and open fiber network is being deployed. For ultra-fast internet speeds of up to 10 Gbps, switching to fiber will therefore be the best option.

We always inform residents and stakeholders in advance about the planning and impact of our works. A letter is delivered to residents at least 10 days before excavation works begin. The letter includes the contact details of the partner carrying out the works. For fiber connections, residents and businesses can contact their telecom provider, who can determine whether a connection to the network is available.

The partnership enables a more efficient rollout of high-performance telecom infrastructure, giving all customers in Flanders faster and broader access to internet speeds of up to 10 Gbps. To achieve this, we combine a dual‑network approach with the rollout of a single shared fiber network across large parts of Flanders, complemented by further upgrades to the HFC network. As part of the partnership, we also guarantee open access everywhere. This means that all service providers can use this infrastructure through wholesale access based on open, transparent, and non-discriminatory terms.

For more information about access conditions for our fiber and HFC networks, please visit our Offer page.

No. We have also made commitments regarding HFC, including the upgrade to DOCSIS 4.0, which will enable speeds of up to 10 Gbps over the HFC network as well. This ensures that operators have access to 10 Gbps across all of Flanders. The HFC network will also be subject to guarantees for wholesale access based on open, transparent, and non-discriminatory terms. For more information about access conditions for our HFC network, please visit our Offer page.

Thanks to this partnership, fiber optic networks will be deployed faster and more efficiently for your construction projects. Across much of Flanders, only one party will build the network. Only in cities and densely populated areas will Wyre and Proximus each deploy their own fibre networks. Where possible, we coordinate our works closely to minimize disruption and carry out infrastructure works more efficiently. For new construction projects, this means that in many cases only one party will deploy its network, whether fiber or HFC. In areas where a dual network is built, the current situation remain unchanged.

No. In principle, new construction projects will be connected according to the same approach as outlined in the partnership. Where a single shared network is being deployed, the party responsible for the rollout in that area will generally connect your project. Where a dual network is being built, both parties may still deploy their own network. For some projects, a connection to the HFC network may also be provided.

When the partnership was approved, Wyre and Fiberklaar gained insight for the first time into the allocation of the geographical areas. We are currently analyzing this allocation to obtain a complete overview of which party will deploy its network where.

For projects where you have already submitted a connection request and received the technical guidelines, nothing will change for now. If any changes are required, Wyre will contact you.

Yes, they will still be free to choose their operator. Wherever a shared network is deployed, both Wyre and Fiberklaar will guarantee open access to the network. This means that, among others, Proximus, Orange and Telenet will be available everywhere. The choice of operator is therefore completely independent of the party deploying the network.

Where the HFC network is upgraded, all operators will also continue to have access to the network. Where a dual network is deployed, the choice of operator will depend on the party that has already deployed its network.

Thanks to this partnership, we are giving everyone faster access to the fastest internet available and building a future-ready network across Flanders. The partnership also means less disruption, as in most cases only one party will build the network. Only in cities and densely populated areas will Wyre and Proximus each deploy their own fiber networks. This also affects you as a property manager. Where a shared network is being deployed, only one party will provide the fiber connection for your apartment building. This includes connecting the building, installing the equipment in the technical room, and providing the vertical cabling to each apartment. Only in cities and densely populated areas may more than one network still be deployed.

For connection projects that have already started with Wyre, nothing will change for now. We are currently analyzing the allocation of areas where a single shared network will be deployed. This will give us a complete overview of which party will be responsible for the rollout in each region. If this analysis shows that changes are required for your project or situation, we will of inform you without delay.
